Earthworks in Mount Barker.

Mount Barker is the Adelaide Hills' main growth centre, with new residential estates around the township and toward Totness, Littlehampton and Nairne. For builders, that means a steady run of house sites on rolling Hills ground, each needing a cut, a pad, drainage and often retaining.

The ground and the work in Mount Barker

Hills ground is less predictable than the plains: shallow rock in some areas, winter-wet clays in others, and slopes that call for benching. We price from the site, the engineer's documents and the geotechnical report, and rock found below the expected level is handled as a documented variation.

New estates usually come with design guidelines and specified stormwater connections. Pads, retaining and drainage are built to the approved plans for the lot, and finished levels are documented for the builder and certifier.

Road works are part of the picture too. Mount Barker District Council's interchange upgrade adds a new northbound bridge over the South Eastern Freeway, and the state's Verdun interchange is under construction. Expect traffic management and changed access routes on some days while those works run.
